Throughout my journey as an author and leader I have enjoyed my collaboration with The Actuarial Society of Kenya (TASK).

When I was elected as President of the UK’s Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, the messages of encouragement I received from the Kenyan actuarial community reinforced the idea that leadership is a shared experience — one that thrives on community and mutual growth.

Through my collaboration with TASK, I’ve had the privilege to mentor and support actuaries as they navigate their careers, emphasizing the significance of aligning their actions with their values.

Empowered Evolution Book Launch in Kenya

Recently, I had the honor of launching my book, Empowered Evolution, in Kenya with the support of TASK. This event was not just a celebration; it was an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about the traits necessary for navigating work and life — being grounded in meaning, managing one’s mindset and intentional momentum. We delved into how these attributes are essential not only for actuaries but for leaders in every field.

One of the key themes I address in Empowered Evolution is imposter syndrome, an issue many people face. By framing it as a sign of growth rather than inadequacy, I advocate for a mindset shift—something I’ve been privileged to discuss with the Kenyan actuarial community. These conversations have highlighted the importance of redefining success to one’s personal ambitions rather than societal expectations.

Listen to Understand, and You will Create a Meaningful Connection

Another aspect of leadership that resonates deeply with my work is the power of listening. During my engagements with TASK, I realized how crucial it is to create spaces where diverse viewpoints are not just heard but truly valued. Empowerment, to me, is about lifting others as we climb. My goal has always been to create an empowering environment for others to thrive, and my engagements with TASK are a testament to this vision.

As I reflect on this journey, I am reminded of the collective experiences that shape the environments we influence. I encourage my peers in Kenya and globally to define success on their own terms, and to empower others along the way. My hope is that through my work and our shared efforts, we contribute to a future where leadership is not only inclusive and dynamic but also rooted in the strength of our communities.
